Extrusion Co-extrusion and mono are two different processes used in the production of vinyl. Each has very different and that differences should be aware that method uses manufacturer before purchasing a vinyl fence. See the descriptions below as to what method of production of vinyl is best and that you should avoid.

Mono-extrusion
Mono-extrusion is the original form of a vinyl fence and even vinyl siding is made. With Mono-extrusion UV protector is injected into the mixture of vinyl all have 100% saturation everywhere. Now most companies use vinyl co-extrusion, where products are extruded vinyl fence in 2 layers – one capstock (the outer layer with UV protector) and a substrate (inner layer). Using co-extrusion gives the vinyl fence profile only 20% UV protection coverage, which is a thin outer layer called capstock. Basically I think of a vinyl mono-extruded as a solid piece molded vinyl all ingredients mixed together and formed.

Co-extrusion
The vinyl fence profile co-extrusion is made of two layers: an outer layer (called the capstock) containing UV inhibitors and an inner layer (called the substrate), with UV protection small but growing impact resistance material. These two streams are chemically bonded together under extreme pressure and temperature to form a continuous flow that can not be separated. Co-extrusion is initially quite expensive because it requires specialized equipment, tools, training and in general is a more complicated manufacturing process, but is significantly reduced material costs. You can see that the inner layer is a different color than the outer layer, this is because many manufacturers of the inner layer of material to sharpen (rework) to make vinyl products more cost effectively. This does not affect product durability or performance vinyl, if not used recycled materials. When all is said and done, although the initial investment by the manufacturer of the equipment is more expensive, in general terms a co-extruded vinyl fence product is slightly more affordable without sacrificing quality. Vinyl Bufftech developed this prior art co-extrusion process, which has become the industry leader in standards and most manufacturers of vinyl fence co-extrusion. These are legitimate companies back their products with lifetime warranties, meeting ASTM standards near vinyl. The competing manufacturer that mono-extrusion warn that since co-extrusion can result in layers of different color, a scratch on a fence co-extruded vinyl reveal the substrate color – like a scratch on a car to reveal the color layer. However, as co-extruders Bufftech how to solve this problem and make the outer layer thick enough to prevent scratching to penetrate through the substrate layer.

Co-extrusion is the most advanced technology resulting in a high quality product more affordable. UV protection is on the outside, while the inner layer has been improved for strength. So you should consider looking for a manufacturer that uses this method when choosing a vinyl fence to install, Bufftech CertainTeed vinyl products is a good place to look.
