What is the distribution of personal possessions long after death?

My mother died recently and my father 25 years ago. There is a will covering the house, but they are the following: 1. about 20 paintings that my father painted and departure of these three options will be really popular. 2. The way my family did this was to show the items that were not in the will and let anyone decide what they would like.
