Why the smoke out of the shifting around John Deere 310 Backhoe?

Test driving a used backhoe about 200 yards and saw smoke all over the floor mounted gear shift. There were also burnt smell. He immediately pulled the unit. Everything else seemed to work well. Have a great price. But I want to know more about what would be involved in when driving at first, and push in the clutch, I can not change to 2 or higher. The team are ground only. I had to stop, put in neutral and then put in the 2nd.

likely cause is oil or contaminants, s on disk clutch and pressure plate .. many tractor, s will not move until a full stop .. this is due to the lack of synchronizer, s in the transmission … you will able to change once you learn to match engine RPM to the speed of the tractor … take this practice, SA, while mastering … so the smoke .. you should have the rear main seal engine and transmission input seal, and check the clutch itself … good luck. … one 310D is a good reliable unit … if the price is right … go for it.
